If you want to win the game, you cannot leave half the team on the bench

Trade Catalyst Africa joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 (IWD2026) under the theme #GiveToGain.

Across Africa, women are at the heart of trade. They grow crops, manufacture goods, move products across borders, and run businesses that sustain families and communities.

Yet despite their central role, women entrepreneurs and traders continue to face barriers to finance, markets, and trade infrastructure. These challenges not only limit individual opportunity, but also Africa’s broader economic growth.

As former U.S. President Barack Obama said during his visit to Kenya: “If you want to win the game, you cannot leave half the team on the bench.”

The same principle applies to trade and economic growth. Africa cannot fully realise its economic potential if women are excluded from participating fully.

At Trade Catalyst Africa, we work to mobilise capital for trade infrastructure, digital trade systems, and SME finance platforms. Strengthening these systems helps more women-led businesses connect to markets, scale their operations, and participate in regional and global trade. Furthermore, their inclusion and participation strengthen value chains, support job creation, and promote more inclusive economic growth.

On this #IWD2026, we are reminded that investing in women’s participation in trade is not only a matter of fairness, but also a driver of economic growth and resilience across Africa.

TCA celebrates the women driving Africa’s trade forward and reaffirms our commitment to building trade systems that make trade more inclusive, accessible, and impactful for all.

Happy International Women’s Day.
